# 1 Introduction

# 1.1 Overview

The SP2-IMX8 Series open-frame panel PC is based on the ultralow-power ARM A53 series processors featuring flexible IO options. The SP2-IMX8 Series features efficient capabilities and compact size that are easy to integrate with kiosk and panel PC applications.

Before unpacking, check the shipping carton for any damage. If the shipping carton and/or contents are damaged, inform your dealer immediately. Retain the shipping carton and packing materials for inspection. Obtain authorization from your dealer before returning any product to ADLINK. The altitude during operation is up to 5000 m whose output meets LPS and SELV (ES1) circuits.

# 2.5 Installing a Wi-Fi Module

Follow these steps to add or change a Wi-Fi modules.

1. Remove the 6 screws that attach the rear cover to the chasis and remove the cover.

3. Connect Wi-Fi antenna wires from the chassis to the Wi-Fi Module.

4. Reattach the rear cover to the chasis with the previously removed screws.

5. Attach the Wi-Fi antennas to the outside of the chassis.

# 2.6 Mounting

This section includes details for panel and VESA mounting options.

When mounting the device, use the screws to mount the VESA bracket to the rear of the device. Tighten all four screws firmly to support the weight of the device. Make sure that the suspension system is capable of carrying the device!

# 2.6.1 Panel Mounting

The SP2-IMX8 Series can be panel mounted with 14 mounting clips (optional items sold separately). Make sure there is adequate space behind the panel for ventilation, and that the panel material and thickness can support the weight of the device.

Step 1: Cut the panel opening using the appropriate cutout dimensions.

# 3.1.4 Function Button

The function button overrides the eMMC boot behavior option. Since eMMC is the default first boot device, this means the function button effectively changes the preferred boot device. The first boot device can be changed using the Boot Mode switches in the next section, and may significantly alter the functionality of this button. See “Boot Mode Switch” on page 31.

By default, holding the function button and then attaching the AC power connector will cause the system to boot from the microSD card. If there is no boot code or boot device in the microSD card slot, the system will boot in to serial download mode.

The MicroSD card slot can be used for expanded storage. The slot supports SDR12, SDR25, SDR50, SDR104, and DDR50 speed grades.

# 4 Getting Started with SP2-IMX8 Kit

This section provides helpful tips for booting up the SP2-IMX8 LPDDR4 development kit.

This chapter assumes default Boot Mode Switch configuration and function button behavior. If you experience unexpected behavior with the function button, verify that the device has not been opened after delivery or, if it has been opened, that the Boot Switch configuration has not been changed. See "Function Button" on on page 21 and "Boot Mode Switch" on on page 31 for details.

# 4.1 Connecting Optional External Displays

SP2-IMX8 supports external HDMI displays in addition to the integrated LVDS touch panel. For SP2-IMX8 development kit options with no LVDS touch panel, the external HDMI display can act as a primary display instead.

# 4.2 Connecting Power

Connect a regulated 12v DC power supply to the DC power port on SP2-IMX8 to power the device on. To power off the device, remove the power supply.

# 4.3 Creating and Booting from a Micro-SD Card

The SP2-IMX8 Development Kit ships with empty eMMC storage and does not include a pre-built Linux binary demo image.

A pre-built Yocto based binary demo image with graphical desktop (NXP desktop) can be downloaded and flashed to a MicroSD card.

Once the binary demo image is downloaded and flashed, the card can be used to boot into a working GUI desktop environment.

# 4.3.1 Creating a Bootable MicroSD Card

You can boot into a Linux environment in preparation for flashing to the on-board eMMC. ADLINK provides a demo image built specifically for the SP2-IMX8 board configuration.

1. On an existing PC, download the image from the ADLINK website at the following URL:

https://www.adlinktech.com/Products/Panel\_PCs\_- Monitors/Panel\_PCs\_Monitors/SP2-IMX-8\_Series?Lang=en

2. Using an image flashing tool, flash the bootable WIC image on to the microSD card. You can use a GUI tool such as BalenaEtcher, or a command-line tool, such as bmaptool from the bmap-tools package.

You can also use the image flashing tool to flash the on-board eMMC directly using the USB Mass Storage Mode.

# 4.3.2 Booting from a MicroSD Card

To boot from a flashed microSD card:

1. With the device powered off, insert the microSD card into the slot.
2. Press and hold the function button, and then connect the power. When the green LED illuminates, release the function button.
3. After the ADLINK logo, the device proceeds to the U-Boot process. If uninterrupted, it will continue to boot the kernel.

As Linux boots up, you will see a number of Linux Penguins in the upper left corner of the screen, followed by a GNOME-like GUI desktop environment on the LVDS touch panel.

If no valid boot image is available on the microSD card, or no card is inserted, the device will fall back to Serial Download Mode.

# 4.3.3 Flashing Linux to the eMMC from the microSD card

The easiest way to install Linux onto the on-board eMMC is to use the installer script from the desktop.

1. Once the desktop is booted, open a terminal window.

2. Type 'installer.sh' and press Enter to run the installer script.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation process.
4. Once the installation process is completed, eject the microSD card and cycle the power or reset the device.

When the device is powered back on, it will now boot from the onboard eMMC.

# 4.4 Advanced Features

# 4.4.1 Accessing On-Board eMMC from Another Device

The bootloader for SP2-IMX8, U-Boot, supports using emulated eMMC as USB Mass Storage, allowing you to use the on-board eMMC storage on another computer as though it was a USB drive.

Before you begin: Make sure you have flash a microSD card with the prebuilt image.

1. Connect the SP2-IMX8 to your computer using a micro USB cable.
2. Insert your microSD card into the slot on SP2-IMX8.
3. Press and hold the function button while resetting/powering on the SP2-IMX8.
4. Continue to hold the function button until the instructions for USB Mass Storage mode appear. The device storage

should now be visible on the host computer.

5. Use a flashing tool to flash the image onto the emulated mass storage device (on-board eMMC storage).
6. Once the flashing process completes, disconnect the cable and restart the device. You will now be able to boot from the newly flashed eMMC storage.

# 4.4.2 Flashing an Image Using the Universal Update Utility in Serial Download Mode

The Universal Update Utility (UUU) runs on a Windows or Linux OS host and is used to download images to eMMC storage devices on an i.MX board.

Before you begin: Make sure you have installed UUU on your computer and downloaded the necessary bootloader and eMMC image before proceeding.

1. To boot into serial download mode, connect the device to your computer with a microUSB cable, and then turn the device on while holding the function button. Make sure no microSD card is inserted.

2. On your computer, open a shell.
3. Use lsusb to verify that the SP2-IMX8 is in serial download mode.
4. Run uuu -b emmc\_all &lt;path to bootloader&gt; &lt;path to eMMC image&gt; to flash the image.
5. Disconnect the cable and reboot the device.

# 4.4.3 Using a Serial Console Cable

You can connect a serial console cable by connecting a USB to UART adapter cable to the debug port on the development board. This feature is provided for developers needing to access the system directly.

NOTE:

The debug port operates at TTL voltage levels, with the TX pin connecting to RX on the UART cable, and RX pin to TX on UART cable. The USB end connects to a computer.

 If the device will not be used for long periods of time, turn off and unplug from its power source.
 Never attempt to repair the device, which should only be serviced by qualified technical personnel using suitable tools.

 A Lithium-type battery may be provided for uninterrupted backup or emergency power.

 The device must be serviced by authorized technicians when:

 The power cord or plug is damaged
 Liquid has entered the device interior
